ENGLISH FAKE NEWS 1282 REGARDS THE BATTLE OF IRFON BRIDGE - 'THERE ARE NO 'GHOSTS ON THE FAIRWAY' BUILTH GOLF COURSE FABRICATION. SO WHY A COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE TO BE UNVEILED THIS OCTOBER 2022 - A VANITY PROJECT MAYBE?.

Here we go again. Unfortunately fictions build on fictions, and it does factual Welsh history no favours whatsoever. Unless you factor in the money from tourism as in the case of 'Bedd Gelert.' The sole source used for this plaque is the English Peterborough Chronicle. The chronicler wrote that 3000 out of 7000 were killed, and that not one single English soldier was killed or injured in the action. It is a boastful fiction - nothing more. It also lends itself to the sneering comment that has already been spread that "4000 Welshmen ran away." We don't know how many soldiers were killed. We certainly don't know if any Welsh soldiers 'ran away'. The only prime source evidence comes from a letter written at the time by Roger Lestrange, King Edward's commander who reported that the 'flower of his army were killed." So why put any number on a plaque? As for the notion that they were killed in the vicinity of the Golf Course- unfortunately that is another fiction. In the 1980s, Anthony Edwards, spoke to a greenkeeper who told him that he thought he had seen some bones there. He had no idea if they were human or animal bones, or how many. So Anthony put two and two together, and his imagination took over. He wrote a booklet 'Ghosts on the Fairway', published in 1988. He later realised he had been mistaken. Since then, several of us have spoken to people connected with or employed at Builth golf club but no-one else recalls having seen any bones, and no penetrating scan has been done of the grounds. Research published by Paul Remfry puts forward that there are more likely sites a distance away. As we don't know how many were killed, or where, it would surely be more respectful to put a memorial plaque alongside the site of the existing memorial to Prince Llywelyn at Cilmeri, without mentioning on it a specific number who were killed on 11th / 12th December 1282.
